If you are going to take it externally, just put it in a regular cooking recipe as a substitute for butter or vegetable oil. For a desired result, you will need to make coconut oil a regular thing. You will constantly need to massage your head with the oil. The massaging helps stimulate blood circulation. Do the massaging step for about 10 minutes, three or four times a week. Usually people will just have it in their hair for 20 minutes and then wash it out. But since each head is unique, the timing for things will differ. Sometimes it will be necessary to wear a shower cap and keep the oil on for one or two hours. If it is for a few minutes to a couple of hours, it is recommended that you sit in the sun or under a hair dryer to keep the scalp warm.
Some people have found that coconut oil for hair works best for them if they keep it in their hair all night. It is absolutely true that there isn’t a “too long.” In every case, the longer the better. And after a long time, it will wash out, but the softness won’t and will be well worth the effort. If you do go to bed with it on, it is even more important that you keep the shower cap on to avoid staining the linens. The amount of pure coconut oil you use will also depend on your hair. For short and/or thin hair use about ¼ teaspoon. For thick and/or long hair use about ½ teaspoon.
